MATERIAL

PROPERTIES

Polyesters Properties

1. LIGHT WEIGHT

2. DURABLE

3. GOOD ELASTICITY

4. GOOD SHAPE RETENTION

5. IS NOT BIODEGRADABLE

6. MADE FROM PETROLEUM, A FINITE MATERIAL

Polyesters Dirty Secrets

1. RELEASES HIGH QUANTITIES OF MICROFIBRES

2. POOR MOISTURE ABSORPTION

3. CREATES STATIC ELECTRICITY

4. IS NOT A SUSTAINABLE OR RESPONSIBLE MATERIAL

5. IS NOT BIODEGRADABLE

Virgin Polyester

Raw Materials

Polyester is derived from crude oil petroleum, a finite material and one of our most valuable and non renewable resources we have.

It is understood that if we continue to use this material at the rate in which we have been for the past two years we will run out of resources by XXXXX

Source or first impact

until such times where polyester filaments/ polymers can be reengineered to prevent the release of microfibres, we must stop using these synthetics in our clothing

Designing out waste

Mono-material design is key, whether you are designing a new piece of furniture, outerwear, footwear or other

This allows products to be recycled easily without fibre / polymer seperation

Title 3 - Labelling

We need to be clear, concise and supply transparent & trueful information of the environmental impacts to consumers buying products made from virgin materials

Title 4 - Production

Processing polyester used X energy

Title 5 - End-of-life & Circular Solutions

Plastic takes between 50-2000+ years to degrade (If ever)

It is said that we are only recycling X% all of polyester

Recycling options are 1. Mechanical recycling which.........

2. Chemical polymer recycling, which ......

Recycled Polyester

Raw Materials

It is understood that if we continue to use this material at the rate in which we have been for the past two years we will run out of resources by XXXXX

Source or first impact

It is best that water/ drink bottles are returned to the drinks industry to be reprocessed in their closed loop recycling facilities for their own products.

If we used recycled polyesters for subscription products such as Adidas's Future Craft shoe where all elements were made using the one mono material, we can keep plastics in products that require almost zero laundering and avoid microfibre release via our waterways.

Title 3 - Labelling

Communication needs to be honest and transparent

'Saving the oceans' by buying recycled polyester products has to also let the consumer know that the product is releasing microfibres back into the oceans.

These products cannot be classed as sustainable, as our planet cannot accept much more of them.

Title 4 - Production

same as virgin polyester. However not all polyesters are equal, so some recycling companies seek specific virgin polyester feed stocks and avoid lower grade polyesters that can be found in our clothing. It is important to know your polyester supply chain and work with your end of life solution provider before you start designing.
