Australian Textile Graduate of the Year 2020

The Design Institute of Australia has announced the winners of the 2020 Graduate of the Year Awards. The GOTYA program is a unique awards program created to support and celebrate exceptional designers from around Australia in the early stages of their career. This program is instrumental in providing tertiary institutions and design graduates with vital, real-life feedback from experienced designers and industry figures.

Caro Pattle was named the Australian Textile Design Graduate of the Year for 2020, nominated by Dr Rebecca Van Amber a senior lecturer of Fashion and Textiles at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Caro’s practice explores materiality. She uses a range of time-intensive hand processes to work with, and expand, the meanings and possibilities inherent in materials. Her projects span large-scale public art installation through to objects for interior worlds.

It's A Material World, graduate collection by Caro Pattle, 2019

'It’s A Material World is a series of object propositions which investigate how textile remnants and deadstock could be reintegrated into a circular economy. The project explores hands-on craft processes which both exploit and modify the properties of under-valued textiles. The collection itself is a circular eco-system in miniature; the waste products from one process feed into the resources needed for another.'
