Smart Stitch

Recycling is still one of the biggest obstacles in the fashion industry, and game-changing ideas are needed to give old garments a new life instead of ending up in a landfill. Resortecs looked at the details and realized a lot could be done if only the seams would let go easily in the recycling process.

Awarded: €150,000 Year: 2018 Company: Resortecs

For brands that advocate the circular economy, resortecs® provides hot-fusing stitching threads to manufacture textile products that are easy to recycle and repair.

Zippers and buttons make garment recycling complicated as the removal of such details call for manual assistance, making the process both costly and time-consuming.

Resortecs’ sewing thread solves this problem: it can be used on existing stitching machines, but unlike regular sewing thread it dissolves at 200 degrees Celsius. When used for seams, the whole textile product can easily be disassembled so that the

fabric can be used over and over in new ways, cutting the need to produce fabric from scratch.

Next to facilitating repair and recycling, the stitching thread helps reduce the costs involved with unsold inventory by efficient processing, reduces environmental impacts and CO2-emissions, allows for companies to become future proof with regards to material sourcing and prepares brands for the changing (environmental) legislation – especially in Europe.

Resortecs was launched in 2017 by Cédric Vanhoeck and Vanessa Counaert.

It's mission? Accelerate the implementation of the circular economy in the textile industry and reduce its environmental harmful impact.

Resortecs’ sewing thread has been awarded by the Global Change Award in 2018 – an innovation challenge initiated by the H&M Foundation to accelerate the shift from a linear to the circular fashion industry. Since 2019, Resortecs is also part of the Fashion For Good program which is initiated by the C&A foundation.

.GLOBAL GOALS.

COMPANY OBJECTIVES 2019/2020

Resortecs was launched in 2017 by Cédric Vanhoeck and Vanessa Counaert.

Its mission? Accelerate the implementation of circular economy in the textile industry and reduce its environmental harmful impact.

Resortecs’ thread does not require modifications in manufacturing or design. It is one of the simplest and most affordable ways for brands to advance towards product circularity.

Goal 12 wants to make us think twice about the things we use, the waste we create, and how that impacts the planet. Changing our behaviour towards more sustainable actions such as recycling really makes a difference when everyone -that includes individuals, companies, government - contributes.
