Modular Children’s Furniture Changes As You Do

Arcadia Design’s children’s furniture collection has been designed with modularity in mind. This means that through creative remodelling, the furniture can stay in the family long after the child grows out of it.

Arcadia Design has designed a completely modular children’s furniture collection that can be remodelled to suit families’ needs at different times in their children’s lives. Once a child outgrows for the furniture, the pieces can be taken apart and repurposed for a desk, photo frames, flower beds or a number of other creative uses. In addition, the modular design means that damage to one part of the furniture does not mean replacing the whole piece – any part can be individually purchased – extending the furniture’s lifespan.

The pieces are only made from solid wood, eliminating the need for adhesives typically used in fibreboards. They are coated with non-toxic lacquer, and coloured using water-based paints. This makes them easy to remodel and safe to dispose of. Their wood comes from two sources; either from Forest Stewardship Council certified European ash trees, or locally grown Italian chestnut trees. Each product is delivered disassembled to reduce the impacts of packaging and transportation.

Why you should care

European businesses and consumers discard of over 10 million tonnes of furniture each year as a result of low quality materials, poor availability of repair services and spare parts, limited reverse logistics infrastructure and more. Arcadia Design is attempting to tackle these issues by using circular design principles in their children’s furniture products, so as to ensure that they are durable, easy to repair, and can be easily repurposed at the end of use.

Why does this relate to the Fashion & Textile Industries?

Based on all of the visual merchandising and store fit outs that happen each season per brand, independent designer or small boutique, we have to question the waste that is incurred and how we could change the system that we have currently been working with? There is no reason why our store fittings, fixtures and displays could not be made more modular allowing an entire annual cycle that utilises the same pieces over and over again in different set ups. We challenge brands to challenge the design process and rethink how they design, create and produce everything from a store interiors, seating areas, changing rooms, window displays, special seasonal displays through to their coffee shops, eateries and the end-of-life processes.

How the Global Goals are addressed

Responsible consumption and production

Arcadia Design is helping to reduce waste and improve resource management by ensuring that their furniture is durable and can easily be repurposed or repaired.
